Vukosi Marivate

Prof. Vukosi Marivate is the Principal Investigator of the AI4D African Languages Lab, leading efforts to advance inclusive AI through African languages.

The Lab focuses on addressing key barriers to natural language processing (NLP) for African languages, including limited data, lack of evaluation tools, and constrained research capacity. Its work centres on improving data availability, evaluating bias and inclusivity across languages, strengthening low-resource NLP capacity through training and mentorship, and engaging policymakers on equitable data governance and licensing.

Through this work, the Lab aims to unlock the potential of African-language AI applications across sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and public service delivery.
