AI and digital governance: A view from the Global South

As governments across Africa and the Global South grapple with the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence and digital transformation, the need for contextually grounded, evidence-based research on digital governance has never been greater. The AI Governance from the South project, led by the Tayarisha Digital Governance Research Group at the University of the Witwatersrand, brings together researchers and practitioners from across the Global South to explore the political, strategic, and governance dimensions of AI and emerging digital technologies.
Through a curated collection of 20 working papers, policy dialogues, and strategic communications activities, the project seeks to strengthen the visibility and influence of Global South perspectives in international debates on AI and digital governance. The research addresses critical issues ranging from AI governance and digital public infrastructure to digital inclusion, data governance, and the regulation of emerging technologies, generating actionable insights for policymakers, regional organizations, and international institutions.
