AI and other automated technologies broadly described as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) are often positioned as an antidote to problems of disparity and inequity. However, several studies have documented women’s lack of access to the myriad opportunities afforded by the 4IR in Africa. It is a fiction that the old order will simply be replaced by post-gender structures. On the contrary, AI is located very much within, reinforces and often amplifies the old gendered and racial structures of power.
