Overview
In Malawi, smallholder farmers are feeding families and fueling local economies but without the right tools, water and nutrients are being wasted on fields that could produce so much more. Across thirty irrigation schemes in southern Malawi, farmers have long struggled to manage water and soil efficiently, leading to lower crop yields, food insecurity, and limited income in some of the country's most vulnerable communities.
A new project is changing that by building institutional arrangements that bring together public and private sector players around AI-powered soil moisture and nutrient monitoring tools. By strengthening partnerships with local water associations and delivering hands-on, learn-by-doing training, the project ensures that farmers don't just access the technology but also understand and own it.
Farmers are using water and nutrients more efficiently, crop yields are rising, and families have more food on the table and more produce to sell. Better water governance across the schemes means the benefits extend beyond individual farms, creating a foundation for long-term food security and economic resilience across southern Malawi.
