South African Atmospheric Quality Monitoring (SACAQM)
AI_r

Overview

The AI-powered air quality monitoring system leverages low-cost IoT sensors to track, analyze, and predict pollution in real time. Compact, mountable anywhere, and using laser-based detection for precision, the system sends updates every five minutes to the cloud, enabling continuous, automated environmental monitoring with minimal human intervention.

Since 2023, 30 AI_R monitors have been deployed across Johannesburg and the broader Gauteng region, with plans to expand by an additional 120 monitors by 2025 creating the largest and most cost-effective air quality monitoring network in Africa.

The system provides scientists and policymakers with real-time insights, allowing for faster, data-driven responses. Developed in collaboration with government partners, it integrates seamlessly into existing public systems and supports:

  • Localized insights into pollution patterns
  • Identification of air quality hotspots
  • AI-powered forecasting of future pollution trends
  • Evidence-based policymaking
  • Urban planning support
  • Assistance to industries in meeting net-zero targets

Responsible AI Practices

AI_R is designed for developing contexts, prioritizing accessibility and affordability to promote equitable access to environmental data. Its built-in backup battery ensures continuous operation during power outages, supporting reliable data collection even in resource-constrained settings.
