Overview

Mpox is an infectious disease with growing public health significance in Nigeria, yet surveillance systems in many states remain fragmented, under-resourced, and slow to detect emerging outbreaks. Both for the communities most exposed and for the health workers responsible for their care.

Developed by the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) for Ogun State, Mpox Mirror is an AI-powered surveillance and early warning system that combines artificial intelligence and mathematical modelling to support evidence-based prevention and response. The system was built with privacy and accountability at its core: data is anonymized and encrypted, access is controlled, and formal ethical approval was secured from the Ogun State Health Research Ethics Committee before any testing began. Institutional endorsement from the State Commissioner for Health and the State Epidemiologist ensured the tool was grounded in the realities of the health system it serves.

The result is a responsible AI health tool that proves sophisticated disease surveillance is achievable even in settings with limited data infrastructure. With state-level government backing secured ahead of full deployment, Mpox Mirror sets a new standard for ethical digital disease surveillance in Nigeria.
