Overview

In Kenya, where too many mothers and newborns still die from preventable causes, a simple WhatsApp message could be the difference between life and death. PROMPTS, developed by Jacaranda Health, is an AI-powered maternal health messaging platform that is transforming how mothers in Kenya access life-saving care at scale.

Millions of Kenyan mothers face critical gaps in maternal and newborn health information, often missing essential prenatal checkups or postpartum care due to lack of timely guidance and overburdened health systems. With health workers stretched thin and high-risk cases going undetected, the consequences can be fatal.

PROMPTS bridges this gap by delivering personalised, AI-driven health messages to mothers through familiar mobile channels, while intelligently triaging over 5,000 daily help desk messages to ensure the most vulnerable receive urgent hospital care. Built on open-source tools and trained on Swahili language models, the platform is designed for local context keeping humans in the loop and centring the needs of underserved populations in line with Jacaranda's Principles for Responsible, Person-Centred AI.

The results speak for themselves: PROMPTS has reached three million mothers across Kenya, driving a 20% increase in prenatal checkup attendance and doubling the use of postpartum family planning services. With 90% of high-risk cases now successfully routed to hospital care, the platform offers a scalable, equity-driven model for responsible AI deployment in low-resource health settings one that is already saving lives and setting a new standard for maternal care in Africa
