Overview

Cape Verde faces intensifying drought cycles that threaten the livelihoods and food security of its farming communities. With limited access to real-time agricultural data and few tools to monitor crop health or optimize water use, farmers have long had to rely on guesswork in an increasingly unpredictable climate.

The project deploys IoT sensors and AI-driven drone imagery to give farmers precise, actionable data on irrigation needs, pest infestations, and nutrient deficiencies before problems escalate. Critically, farmers are engaged from the very start: community members acquire technical skills and conduct comprehensive field mapping for their entire communities, ensuring the solution is built with them, not just for them.

By enabling farmers to optimize every drop of water and respond early to crop threats, the project is helping sustain soil health and maximize yields through drought cycles. With lessons directly applicable to other nations sharing similar climatic challenges, this community-led, data-driven approach offers a replicable blueprint for responsible AI deployment in agriculture across the Global South.
