AI4D Research and Innovation for Climate Hub

Africa loses up to 5% of its GDP each year to climate shocks, despite contributing less than 4% of global emissions. The AI Climate Innovation Hub—led by Kenya’s Local Development Research Institute (LDRI) and AfriClimate AI—is set to change this. The Hub will supercharge locally led climate‑AI solutions, giving innovators access to mentorship, climate data, responsible AI expertise, and strategic partners needed to scale.
Over three years, the Hub will accelerate at least four high‑impact, African‑built AI tools focused on agriculture, early warning systems, climate forecasting, and community resilience—solutions that can transform outcomes for millions of people across Sub‑Saharan Africa. It will generate cutting‑edge evidence on the environmental footprint of AI, unlock access to weather and climate datasets, and ensure African expertise actively shapes global AI‑and‑climate policy agendas. This project will drive forward key priorities: expanding responsible AI innovation, strengthening African research leadership, shaping fair AI governance, and unlocking the benefits of AI for diverse communities across the continent.
