Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development Goals (AI4SDG) Lab
Despite the growing use of AI in education, its impact in Africa is limited by challenges such as poor-quality datasets, lack of adaptation to local languages, and ethical concerns like bias and weak regulation. These issues particularly affect marginalized groups, restricting their access to quality education. Most AI tools are developed outside African contexts, making them ill-suited to local needs. This project aims to explore how AI can enhance learning accessibility, improve content delivery, and address ethical risks, especially for underserved communities and in local language contexts.
Building on previous research under the EduAI Hub, this project seeks to address key challenges in applying AI to education in Africa, including limited high-quality datasets, underrepresentation of local languages, and lack of inclusive learning tools. The lab aims to develop foundational AI models in Hausa and Yoruba, design personalized learning systems for marginalized communities, and advance ethical frameworks for AI in education. These efforts will support SDGs 4 and 5 and offer scalable solutions across sectors
