AI for Mpox Prevention and Response in Senegal

Overview
Mpox poses a significant public health threat, demanding responses that are both rapid and evidence-driven. In Senegal, where cross-border movement and mass gatherings create acute transmission risks, the gap between outbreak data and decision-making has historically slowed effective action.
UCAD's AI4MPOX-SN project closed that gap. Across two programme modules, the team tracked 277 suspected cases and delivered AI-driven analysis directly into Senegal's weekly national Mpox response meetings throughout the year. Simultaneously, 250 border officers received targeted training, and nearly 8,000 Grand Magal pilgrims were reached with prevention materials at one of the world's largest religious gatherings.
Recommendations from the research were formally embedded in Senegal's National Health Security Action Plan 2026–2030, the country's five-year strategic framework for health security. The team worked directly with the Minister of Health, the national Mpox Incident Manager, and five other senior officials.
