About

Climate variability and change pose critical threats to Africa’s development, impacting agriculture, water resources, energy, and conflict dynamics. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance adaptation and mitigation efforts by improving evidence-based decision-making and strengthening climate resilience across sub-Saharan Africa.

This project establishes and manages an AI and climate change innovation research network to support the development and scaling of responsible AI solutions for climate action. It fosters capacity building among African innovators and researchers while integrating African-led research into global AI and machine learning networks. The initiative funds 10 climate-focused AI research projects and supports 10 master’s students working at the intersection of AI and climate change.

Part of the first phase of the AI4D program, this network was one of five research networks advancing responsible AI in key sectors, alongside education, gender and inclusion, agriculture and food security, and sexual and reproductive health.
