Launch of the African Hub on AI Safety, Peace and Security
African Hub on AI Safety, Peace and SecurityThe Global Center on AI Governance and the University of Cape Town have launched the African Hub on AI Safety, Peace and Security a first-of-its-kind initiative dedicated to ensuring that Africa leads and shapes the global conversation on responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence. Established under the AI4D network with support from IDRC and FCDO, the Hub will advance multidisciplinary research, strengthen regional capacity, and promote policies that safeguard both people and technology. Anchored in African values and priorities, it aims to transform the continent’s challenges into pathways for equitable innovation ensuring Africa is not just a participant but a leader in defining the future of safe and secure AI

How should Africa respond to the growing power of artificial intelligence (AI)?
For years, experts have debated whether AI could override human control, with opinions ranging from unlikely to inevitable. As AI systems rapidly advance, Africa faces both opportunities and risks across health, education, and governance. The Big AI Debate: Africa’s Outlook webinar series explores African perspectives on AI safety, research, and the implications of frontier technologies. Key takeaways highlight the need for a holistic, context-specific approach to AI safety, the urgent risks of misuse, and the importance of building continental institutional capacity. African-led governance is crucial to ensure AI benefits are inclusive, ethical, and aligned with the continent’s development priorities.

The AI Network of Labs, supported through the AI for Development (AI4D) initiative, brings together a diverse set of research and innovation laboratories across Africa that collectively advance responsible, locally relevant artificial intelligence research and solutions. These labs operate in multiple countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria addressing key development challenges in sectors including health, agriculture, education, climate, language technologies, and AI safety and governance.
Each lab focuses on strengthening local capacity and multidisciplinary research, fostering collaboration between universities, governments, industry and civil society to develop AI tools tailored to regional needs. Across the network, labs emphasize ethical, inclusive, and sustainable AI practices, contributing to a growing ecosystem of responsible AI in the Global South
